We got picked up in a US military jeep. We sat in the open air as we watched the scenery transform from busy scooter-infested roads to open green fields of rice, dotted by the occasional conical hat of a Vietnamese farmer.
We arrived at the dock in the late afternoon. The air was drowsy with the thick heat. Thankfully, we stepped onto the Vietnamese fishing boat to receive cold drinks.
We watched the sunset transform the pastel pinks into dusky blues as we ate our dinner. It was just the two of us, surrounded by candles that appeared to glow more intensely as the night fell.
We glided into the ancient port of Hoi An. The old buildings gracefully adorned with bougainvillea. From the water we could hear the soft laughs and conversation from tourists enjoying the gastronomic delights of the region.
Ahead of time I'd organised for another person in a small boat to release 100 lanterns to surround our fishing boat as we floated into the old port. The lanterns symbolised the many years of good times to come. As the lanterns floated in the water and surrounded our boat, I got down on one knee and asked the question.
I'm pleased to say the answer was yes! So we cast off a few of our own lanterns to mark the occasion.
There was just one more surprise back at the hotel. Married bears to add to Jade's bear collection!
